BUSSEY BROOK MEADOW   &

The South Street Gates seen from the Bussey Brook Meadow.  The gates and path were built by the APC with funding from The Boston Parks and Recreation Department, the Arnold Arboretum, Mass Highways, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and, of course, many generous private donors.
Perhaps the greatest achievement of the Arboretum Park Conservancy to date was to incorporate a long underappreciated segment of open space into the Arboretum Indenture.

The land, known as the Bussey Brook Meadow,  is a beautiful urban wild and is home to many native species of plants, mammals and birds.

To make the meadow attractive to visitors, the APC also constructed gates at both Forest Hill and South Street and constructed a handicapped accessible footpath, known today as the Blackwell Footpath.

This work was accomplished with generous support from The Boston Parks and Recreation Department, the Arnold Arboretum, MassHighways, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and, of course, many generous private donors.

The footpath meanders through a wildflower meadow, wetland,  and along Bussey Brook.  It displays both vistas and small views for close inspection.

The Education Committee of the APC has added informational signs to the Blackwell Footpath.  These signs are changed seasonally and identify the flora and fauna of the meadow as well as other interesting features.

The illustrations are all original artwork created for the APC by one of our members, Anne Schmalz.

In March 2007, Anne's illustrations were exhibited at Boston City Hall.
